1/ What is a dental implant? Some history…
|
|
By the end of the last century, in Honduras , a skull that dates back to the pre-Columbian era, displayed in the socket of a lower incisive, a black stone cut in the shape of a tooth. |
|
The implant is an artificial root that is screwed into the bone onto which dentures are solidly fixed.
Dentures over implants allow those people who are teeth less or partly teeth less to chew efficiently and comfortably.
Dental implants do not constitute a recent innovation. That is simply a technology that develops continuously.
Many studies have shown that a properly positioned with an appropriate prosthetic restoration could last for several years, and even for the whole life.
Dental implants are in titanium. It is a material that has shown its tolerance and its bio-compatibility for the last 30 years.
Hundreds of thousands of patients throughout the world have ascertained its efficacy. For indication purposes, every year: 60 000 implants are installed in France , 80 000 in Italy and 120 000 in Germany . |
|
Ancient Egyptians made similar trials through metallic inclusions.
In 1952, a Swedish surgeon orthopedist, Per-Ingvar Bränemark , adopted the idea of implanting little optical chambers into the bone in order to monitor its healing after a trauma ; He noticed that when they were made of titanium, they were completely bonded to it after healing, and were therefore impossible to remove.
When applied to dentistry, this discovery gave way to « osteointegration » which allowed later on to screw – with no risk of complications - metallic implants into the jawbone

|
| 2/ Who can have a treatment by implants? |
Any person who reached the end of growth and who does not show a general or local absolute contraindication, and who is partly or totally teeth less.
Those fitted with mobile dentures and who wish to stabilize them. |
4/ What are the advantages of implants? |
|
5/ What is the success rate of implants? |
| The main advantage is the increase in the chewing power. It has been demonstrated that if dentulous persons use only 20% of the chewing power of their teeth, implanted patients would chew to the extent of 85 to 95% of the chewing power of their natural teeth.
Thanks to implants, the oral rehabilitation spares natural teeth from any grinding in the case of fixed prosthesis, transforms a removable prosthesis (which is often psychologically badly tolerated) into a fixed prosthesis, and considerably increases the comfort of carrying a total prosthesis, particularly the jawbone one, which is well known for its instability. |
|
The results of dental implants are currently predictable. Each patient must be individually tested by a dentist experienced in implantology.
Multicentre studies on various brands of implants have revealed a success rate that varies on average between 85 et 98% depending on the zone to be implanted. |
| |
|
| 6/ what is osteointegration? |
It is the intimate contact between the surface of the implant and the living bone without interference of soft tissue.

|
| 7/ How old is this method? |
| The first tests on patients took place in 1965 and the American Dental Association (ADA) gave the green light to this technique in 1986.

| Smoking |
|
Harmful action at the level of angiogenic mechanisms that participate in the formation and maintaining of the bone, as wellas of peri-implant and parodontal tissue.
In case there is a will to reduce considerably or totally smoking, this contraindication could be removed. Otherwise, smoking remains an absolute contraindication. |
